Former DEEP PURPLE Keyboardist: Release Date Announced For Durham Concerto CD

December 7, 2007

According to a posting on the DEEP PURPLE fan site Deep-Purple.net, former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord's The Durham Concerto will be released on CD on January 28, 2008 via UK's Avie Records.

The Durham Concerto by Jon Lord was performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mischa Darmev at the Durham Cathedral in England on October 20. Jon took part in the performance as a soloist playing Hammond.

The concerto, which was packed with more than 1,000 music fans, was commissioned to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Durham University, according to the Sunderland Echo.

Lord, 65, is perhaps best known for his four- or five-minute rock songs, but he has always written longer pieces as well.

It was his desire to concentrate on the orchestral works which led him to leave DEEP PURPLE in 2002.
